The following GIS-datasets are free to download
for use in ArcView-GIS or ArcExplorer. The datasets are the
result of a practical exercise in digitizing basemaps (datasources
topographic map 1/500.000 CBL and soil map 1/500.000 DBK) and
recalibrating them from one coordinate system (stereographic)
into another (UTM) and can be used for practice purposes or as a
demonstration dataset.
1 - Demo Dataset Suriname 1/500.000.
The file
Suriname_500000_UTM_July2001.zip contains an ArcView-dataset
describing the topographic map of Suriname on a scale 1/500.000.
The data were compiled purely for demonstration purposes and to
practice wth it within a GIS environment. The data were
digitized from the 1/500.000 topographic map of the Central Buro
for Aerial Mapping, projected in stereographic projection and
transformed to a UTM-zone 21 projection. Coordinate accuracy on
the map is approximately 3km.
Installation
The following instructions will lead you through the
installation:
1. You'll need to download and install
ArcExplorer
2. Copy the ArcExplorer-file
Suriname_500000_UTM_July2001.AEP to C:\Gisdata
3. Unzip Suriname_500000_UTM_July2001.zip to C:\Gisdata\Shapes
After installing ArcExplorer by double clicking the icon on your
desktop after installation open the file
Suriname_500000_UTM_July2001.AEP
Using the File/Open Pulldown in ArcExplorer, open the file
Suriname_500000_UTM_July2001.AEP , located in C:\Gisdata
In the Explorer View (left side on screen) the different
shapefiles are listed that describe the complete demo-map of
Suriname:
- Townvillages_500000_utm_july01.shp (point theme)
- Mainroads_500000_utm_july01.shp (line theme)
- Riverislands_500000_utm_july01.shp (polygon theme)
- Lake_500000_utm_july01.shp (polygon theme)
- Rivers_p_500000_utm_july01.shp (polygon theme)
- Rivers_l_500000_utm_july01.shp (line theme)
- Country_500000_utm_july01.shp (polygon theme)
Now use the HELP-pulldown to learn to use the
ArcExplorer interface and browse through the data.
2 – ADD/ON SOILMAP : Demo Dataset Suriname 1/500.000
Suriname_500000_UTM_July2001.AEP.
ADD/ON datasets are thematic maps that can be loaded on top of
the Demo Basemap 1/500.000 as a seperate Layer . Before using
this dataset ArcExplorer needs to be installed and the Demo
Dataset 1/500.000 needs to be loaded into ArcExplorer.
1. Unzip
Soil_500000_utm_july2001.zip to c:\Gisdata\Shapes
2. Open ArcExplorer. Go to Theme - Add theme
3. Add the file file c:\Gisdata\Soilmap\bodem_500000_utm_0701.shp
to the project.
4. The soilmap is placed on top of the Explorer View.
5. The Soil Map can be dragged under the prior layers, just by
clicking on them and drag them below.
6. To get a better color ramp for the soil map, follow the
following instructions: Make the Layer
Soil_500000_utm_july01.shp active. Go to Theme/Theme Properties
7. A dialogue box appears, click on Unique Value in the
Classification Options.
8. Select CODE1 as Field.
9. When you are asked ‘There are more than….values? ...” Click
yes.
10. In the Discrete Values and Symbols the symbols and their
descrition appear. Click on a symbol to change the color.
11. Click on apply.
12. Activate the Soilmap.
